As a cat owner, you know that cleaning the litter box is one of the least glamorous parts of the job. It’s time-consuming, messy, and frankly, no one wants to do it. So when I first heard about the Litter Robot 4, a self-cleaning litter box that promised to do all the work for me, I was intrigued but also skeptical. Could it really be worth the hefty $700 price tag?

After months of consideration, my husband and I decided to take the plunge and bought the Litter Robot 4. Don’t worry, this isn’t a sponsored review and we weren’t gifted the product. We spent our own hard earned money on this. In this post, I’ll walk you through my experience and share whether I think it’s worth the investment or not after over 1 year of use.

What Is the Litter Robot 4?

The Litter Robot 4 is an automated, self-cleaning litter box that uses a unique sifting system to separate waste from clean litter after your cat uses it. This means no more scooping for you — the unit does it all. It’s a huge upgrade from traditional litter boxes and offers a much cleaner, odor-free solution.

Why We Bought It

Let’s be clear here — the Litter Robot 4 isn’t a small investment. At around $700, it’s definitely on the pricey side. But we decided to buy it for a couple of reasons:

  1. Time-saving: As busy people, we don’t have the time (or energy) to scoop a litter box every day. Also, let’s be honest, even though I work from home, I don’t want to scoop the litter box. It’s just simply not fun and it can be easily to accidentally forget to do it. The Litter Robot promised to take that chore off our hands. Also, we weren’t doing the best at scooping our cat’s litter box every day so we knew something like this would really help us out. It also meant that our cat wouldn’t ever have to use a dirty litter box again! So, that’s a win, win!

  2. Smell: No one wants to live with litter box odors. The Litter Robot 4’s odor control is impressive. Even without using their odor packs, this litter box doesn’t get stinky. This is probably because the waste is cleaned out far before it has a chance to start really getting stinky.

Also, you know when you step inside somebody’s house and you immediately know that they have a cat because of the smell of the litter box? This doesn’t happen at all with the Litter Robot 4. Our house genuinely doesn’t smell like a litter box.

  3. Health Monitoring: The Litter Robot tracks your cat’s usage and can alert you to any potential health issues, like frequent trips to the box.

So, after doing some research, reading many reviews and hearing my aunt’s great experience with it, we decided to go ahead and purchase it.

Setup and First Impressions

Setting up the Litter Robot 4 was surprisingly easy. It comes fully assembled, so all I had to do was plug it in, set up the app and add litter. It’s a sleek design, and I immediately noticed how sturdy and well-built it felt. We placed it right next to our cat’s old litter box and he almost immediately started using it. Our cat Ollie was absolutely shook watching his poop disappear just a few minutes after he used the litter box. It was really funny to watch his reaction.

One of the standout features of the Litter Robot 4 is the quiet operation. Unlike some of the other self-cleaning litter boxes on the market, the Litter Robot doesn’t make much noise when it cycles, which is a huge plus if you have a nervous cat. We were honestly surprised by how quiet it is. You can barely hear it when it’s cycling. The most you hear it is when the poop drops into the waste bin!

Is it safe?

Something that I see being a huge concern for cat owners when it comes to automatic litter boxes is safety. While many self-cleaning litter boxes seem questionable when it comes to safety, the Litter Robot 4 has put my mind at ease. The construction of the litter box is already a huge plus when it comes to safety given the fact that is isn’t enclosed and there’s no way that your cat could just get stuck in the globe.

The Litter Robot 4 is also extremely sensitive so it knows exactly when your cat is in the litter box or even when your cat has just touched it or is standing on the step. The machine even detected our 2 lb. kitten; however, we personally didn’t introduce our first cat Ollie to the Litter Robot until he was 1 year old. The Litter Robot won’t start cycling until 3, 7 or 15 minutes after it has detected that your cat has left. The app let’s you choose the timing. We have ours set to cycle 3 minutes after our cat leaves the litter box. If the machine detects your cat when it’s cycling, it will immediately stop and that timer will restart.

If you have a kitten, the brand recommends that you don’t let your kitten use it until they are at least 3 pounds. Again, it detected our kitten at less but it’s good to be on the safe side. If anything, that just made me feel even better about the Litter Robot. I feel great knowing that this is a safe automatic litter box. Self-cleaning litter boxes that have an enclosed design make me a bit more nervous so I love that the Litter Robot 4 is open.

How Does It Work?

Here’s how the Litter Robot 4 works in a nutshell: once your cat uses the litter box, the unit waits for about 3, 7 or 15 minutes (you program this to what you want) and then begins the cleaning process. The drum rotates, sifting out clumps of waste, which are then deposited into a waste drawer below. Clean litter remains in the box for your cat to use next time. It’s all done automatically, and the best part is that you only need to empty the waste drawer once a week (depending on how many cats you have). With 1 cat using clumping litter, I empty the waste drawer once a week or week and a half.

The Litter Robot 4 also has a large waste drawer, so it can hold more waste than some of the other self-cleaning models. Plus, it has a carbon filter that helps control odors, which is a big bonus in multi-cat households.

Is It Worth the $700 Price Tag?

Now for the big question: is the Litter Robot 4 worth the $700 price tag?

Honestly, after using it for over a year, I can confidently say that yes, it’s absolutely worth the investment — if you can afford it. Here’s why:

  • Saves Time and Effort: The biggest benefit is the time it saves. I don’t have to scoop the litter anymore, which has been a total game-changer for my husband and I. I’ve also noticed that the litter stays much cleaner and smells better because the Litter Robot is constantly sifting it. I also find that the litter goes farther since the Litter Robot cycles it perfectly to only dump the waste and not any of the clean litter.

  • Convenience: It’s super convenient. I don’t have to worry about constantly cleaning up after my cats or dealing with unpleasant smells. The Litter Robot just takes care of everything, and I can focus on other tasks.

  • Durability: The build quality of the Litter Robot 4 is impressive. It’s a long-term investment, and I’m confident it will last for years to come.

  • Health Monitoring: The tracking feature is a nice bonus. It’s reassuring to know that I can keep an eye on my cats’ litter box habits and address any potential health issues early.

  • Size: This specific automatic litter box is big enough to work for large cats. We have Siberian cats which are a large cat breed. The Litter Robot 4 seems to be the only automatic litter box on the market that a larger cat can feel comfortable using since it is spacious and has an open design. We tried another self-cleaning litter box but our cat Ollie felt too crammed in it so he wouldn’t use it. With the Litter Robot 4, Ollie started using it right away!

That said, if you’re on a tight budget, $700 is a lot to spend on a litter box. But if you can swing it, the Litter Robot 4 is definitely worth the investment.
